Kemper Insurance is seeking an experienced SQL Server DBA Manager for our office in Birmingham, Alabama. Alternatively, this position could be located in Jacksonville, FL or Chicago, IL.

This SQL Server DBA Manager position supports multiple teams in optimizing database deployments and performance across a myriad of technologies including on-premise proprietary infrastructure, dedicated hardware, open standards hardware and cloud infrastructure and platform-a-service technologies. Serves in the role of performance analyst. Provides advanced support to system DBAs by providing insights into database optimization and tuning, collaborating with technology teams to select appropriate compute technologies and integrate / optimize storage, memory and compute performance, and work closely with application teams on aligning optimal database performance for application requirements.

Demonstrated ability to design efficient indexes and the ability to execute deep triage of indexes with the goal of recommending performance optimization opportunities. Demonstrated ability to assist in the creation of data models and translate the data models into a functional DB design. Works with teams to create backup and recovery strategies to support appropriate recovery points and recovery times. The ability to understand the needs of application and data warehouse. Must have demonstrated experience in Advanced Performance Database Tuning and SQL Optimization.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Looking for 10+ year experience with SQL Server Databases ,Over 3+ Year experience supervisory role as Database Manager and offshore team mgmt. is plus.
  • Define, document, and implement SQL Server best practices for SQL Server database environments.
  • Define, document, and perform procedures for SQL Server database migrations (hardware refreshes, SQL version upgrades, on prem to cloud migrations -AWS).
  • Manage SQL Server AlwaysOn clusters for SQL Server and above running on Windows 2016 and above.
  • Develop and customize SQL Server maintenance jobs.
  • Monitor and remediate SQL Server maintenance job failures to include backups, DBCC and reindexing.
  • Experience with DB Monitoring tools like Solarwinds DPA
  • Troubleshoot database and instance performance problems.
  • Troubleshoot issues with SQL Server high availability solutions to include Windows Failover Clusters and SQL Server AlwaysOn for servers in private cloud and public cloud environments.
  • Review and provide feedback on scripts and procedures for SQL Server database changes.
  • Implement and maintain database security according to Deloitte security provisions.
  • Proactively monitor database systems to ensure minimum downtime.
  • Perform database analysis and provide tuning recommendations to include database instance configuration, add/drop/change indexes, query tuning, maintenance routines, etc.
  • Review SQL Server instances for standards compliance and best practices.
  • Provide excellent customer service for incident and service request tickets.
  • Drive visibility on key performance, throughput, availability, and customer satisfaction metrics
  • Work with development teams to ensure SQL development best practices are understood and implemented.
  • Review architecture and infrastructure plans to ensure that recommended server resources are adequate for optimum performance and provide high availability.
  • React to and resolve all database related warning and alarms from database monitoring system.
  • Provide database backup and recovery operation according to given strategy.
  • Review and analyze "critical (security) patch" information sent by Microsoft.
  • Manage database storage and capacity planning for internal database objects and database files.
  • Escalate and manage problems to resolution through Microsoft Support, SQL Development Team and/or third parties as appropriate.
  • Provide 24x7 on call support as scheduled.
  • Document SQL standards and team processes/procedures as needed
Required Skills, Abilities & Knowledge:
  • Bachelors Degree in computer science or related technical field, or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years database mgmt experience with 3 years recent experience with SQL Server mgmt
  • Experience with SDLC
  • Ability to communicate clearly (written and oral) with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Posses a proven track record of taking ownership and successfully delivering results
  • Understanding of AWS Cloud architectures and Amazon Aurora PostGres
  • Understand and remain knowledgeable of current and leading-edge technologies
  • Ability to create data models for the integration of multiple systems
  • Organized and attentive to details
  • SQL Server administration activities - database health check, DMV queries, index optimization, performance tuning, query optimization, maintenance plans, link servers, etc. A thorough understanding of DMV views and how to utilize them to improve performance and monitoring.
