Position SummaryThe Department of Crop and Soil Science Extension is seeking a Programmer/Analyst. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position.The incumbent contributes to the mission of the Oregon State University Extension Service ( OSUES ) and the College of Agricultural Sciences ( CAS ) with the principal responsibility for delivery of the Oregon State University Extension Seed Certification Service ( OSCS ) program.
The purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance and augmentation of a one-of-a-kind computing system to meet the business needs of Oregon Seed Services and its clients. The individual in this position will assist in keeping this system operational on a 24/7 basis, as it serves 40 internal and over 3000 external users throughout the Oregon seed industry. This includes driving a motor vehicle for off-site visits to seed companies around the state to facilitate remote tag printing.
The computing system implements the policies of Seed Services and is an ongoing repository of clients' confidential information, therefore, confidentiality is a key component of this position.
This position will learn the design and various uses of the database and front-end core applications of this system.

Position Duties40% Work collaboratively with members of the Seed Services group and customers to learn about the business as it relates to uses of the database and front-end applications.
40% Study database schema and applications for Seed Services. Assist with the development of web-based and desktop applications for clients to conduct certification transactions. Develop database queries to retrieve statistical data from the OSCS database.
15% Perform daily system administration. Provide technical assistance and end user support to internal and external clients. This may necessitate travel to off-site locations which will require maintaining a current, valid driver's license.
5% Other duties as assigned.
Minimum/Required QualificationsBachelor's degree from an accredited university in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related a directly-related field.
Experience with the following:
- Programming in an academic or production environment
- Designing and implementing data centers
- Experience with one or more database management systems such as Oracle, Sybase, or Microsoft SQL server
- Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g. Java, C++, etc.)
Willingness to learn the details of the seed certification and seed laboratory policies and procedures to assure the greatest effectiveness and independence in performing job duties.
Demonstration of effective oral and written communication.
This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OSU Standard ) as per OSU et seq.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 24 months.
