Lighthouse Technology Services is partnering with our client to fill their Middleware Engineer role. This is a 6 month contract to hire opportunity, and can be fully remote in the USA.

Looking for a highly motivated and responsible individual to provide technical design and configuration of middleware infrastructure and platforms in a hybrid cloud environment. As a Middleware Engineer, you will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the success of Technology and support our customers in a profound way. Beyond the typical Middleware responsibilities, you will also be able to use your expertise to contribute to innovative ideas to shape application architecture and design.

This position requires a high degree of collaboration with cross-functional teams and will require excellent verbal and written communication skills. You will interact with architecture, cloud engineering, operations, functional and application development teams to analyze requirements and suggest the best approach for installing, configuring, and maintaining middleware and cloud infrastructure and platforms.

What You'll Be Doing:

Job Functions
  • Fully understand and support the existing cloud infrastructure and middleware configuration for multiple complex applications within Technology
  • Collaborate with architects, developers and build teams to design, configure and document highly available and highly scalable cloud infrastructure and middleware according to Technology standards
  • Develop, implement, and document standard processes for installation, maintenance, and enhancement of middleware applications
  • Manage and support environments in the cloud, including capacity and topology planning, application deployments, performance optimization, configuration, and technical issues
  • Automate infrastructure and configuration using standard tools and languages
  • Set up and manage middleware runtime components including webservers, application servers, messaging servers and reporting services
  • Configure and secure applications and internet facing URLs with strong encryption protocols
  • Work closely with application support personnel and incident management to ensure 24x7 business critical systems are up and running
  • Work in partnership with third party vendors to support configure and support their use within Technology
  • Develop and implement strategies for migration, consolidation, and upgrade of middleware components
  • Demonstrate ability and willingness to share ideas with peers and management.

Consultancy/Customer Service
  • Participate in cross team collaboration for problem analysis, solution identification, implementation, and delivery activities
  • Collaborate with IT teams and end users to understand project requirements and recommend sustainable solutions that meet defined business needs
  • Identify potential product, service, and process opportunities by collecting customer requirements and analyzing business needs
  • Actively look to identify opportunities to enhance organizational efficiency
  • Build sustainable relationships of trust through open and interactive communication
Planning and Organization
  • Understand and be able to communicate daily and weekly Goals as assigned by Manager
  • Plan daily and weekly work activities in alignment with established/defined team Goals/Priorities
  • Execute against approved daily and weekly plans and keep leadership informed of work status/progress
  • Independently manage assigned tasks and project components to complete within established timelines
  • Identify and communicate potential business impacts when planning changes to production systems
  • Participate with management and technical teams to establish appropriate project timelines to deliver sustainable solutions within approved time and budget parameters
  • Demonstrate accountability for physical and logical security/integrity in planning for all projects
Information Processing and Decision Making
  • Actively identify and communicate opportunities to automate repetitive manual processes
  • Collaborate with IT teams, project teams, and institutional leadership teams in root problem analysis, solution identification, implementation, and delivery activities
  • Collaborate with IT teams and internal and external customers to understand project requirements and recommend sustainable solutions that meet defined business needs
  • Understand meaning and importance of information and determine appropriate need and method for keeping team members, customers/stakeholders, and management informed
  • Communicate clearly to technical and non-technical users
  • Keep project, communication, testing, and training documentation updated using defined standards within 3 business days of approved changes
  • Document systems and processes in accordance with defined standards within 3 business days of approved changes
  • Be engaged and participate in individual discussions, project, and team meetings
Problem Solving
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills to help diagnose and troubleshoot issues.
  • Work with the User Support Services team to identify common issues and develop appropriate documentation, training, and automation
  • Establish working partnerships with IT teams and external partners to coordinate problem resolution for operational issues and analyze root cause issues to address underlying infrastructure problems
  • Approach problem solving by understanding the current state, conducting root problem analysis, solution identification, and then planning implementation and delivery activities
  • Develop "as is" and "to be" diagrams to visually represent challenges, risks, and opportunities for improvements
  • Use sound judgement to determine the need to escalate issues/tickets to management awareness
What You'll Need To Have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or Engineering or similarly qualified background
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills (English)
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Positive attitude and solutions-oriented thinking
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Extensive middleware tools experience
  • OS: RHEL, Amazon Linux, Windows
  • Linux Bash Scripting, Linux commands, systemd service and Cron jobs
  • IBM WebSphere Application server, IBM Http Server, IBM MQ
  • Tomcat, NodeJS PM2, Spring Boot Service
  • NGINX, Apache Webserver
  • Application troubleshooting and logs analysis
  • Data encryption - TLS
  • Monitoring tools: Zabbix, Dynatrace, Splunk
  • Agile methodologies (Kanban & Scrum)
AWS Cloud:
  • AWS CloudFormation, CDK (TypeScript)
  • AWS Systems Manager - including documents, parameters, schedules
  • AWS Secrets Manager,
