Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) are looking for a Biosphere Research Manager to join them as they progress in the Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) programme - the UK's largest environmental protection project.

Part of NWS' mission is to deliver a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) and provide radioactive waste management solutions. The GDF will play an important role in resolving the long-outstanding environmental issue of how we safely dispose of legacy and future nuclear waste. It will be one of the most significant national infrastructure projects in the UK and will create investment and employment opportunities which will last for decades.

As as Biosphere Research Manager, you will join the Research Team at a key stage in the development of a growing organisation, and the implementation of the UK Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) for Higher Activity Wastes.


Leading NWS's site-specific biosphere characterisation work - working closely with environmental assessment and environmental safety case specialists.
Develop and manage the development of conceptual biosphere / ecosystem models
Identifying research needs in the areas of biosphere characterisation and biosphere evolution, and develop and implement an appropriate research strategy to meet these needs
Procuring and managing supply chain support for this work.
Acting as a representative of NWS scientific fora and events relevant to the biosphere research strategy

Skills and Experience

University degree (PhD) and work experience (industrial, academic) in a relevant environmental or scientific discipline.
Knowledge of modern biosphere / environmental software
Experience in modelling environmental systems (climate, marine and terrestrial systems), including models that predict the transfer of radionuclides through the terrestrial and marine environment and atmosphere
Ability to deliver high quality written technical reports and deliver verbal presentations
Ability to programme an advantage.
Chartership with a relevant institution (or working towards).
